The UN Security Council met in Magdeburg

03.07.2020 -

PACS students took over the role of diplomats in mid-June: they simulated the UN Security Council and discussed the situation in Yemen.

Before the simulation began, the PACS students conducted a Yemen conflict analysis, wrote a position paper and learnt about conflict resolution and conflict management theories.

Unlike the real Security Council in New York, our Security Council came to a comprehensive conflict-resolving conclusion: it called for an immediate ceasefire in order to send in peacekeeping troops and start a national dialogue forum which, amongst others, shall decide on a Transitional Unity Government. The mandate of the UN controlling mechanism for shipped goods was extended to include all points of entry into the country so that the already existing arms embargo can more effectively be monitored.

The final resolution was supported by all Security Council members unanimously - sending a strong determination to resolve the conflict!
